Someday I'll put some stuff here that is of more interest to Sourcemage users. For now, here's my resume.

AVIN JOSEPH SIGURANI 813 W University Drive, #404 Flagstaff, Az 86001 (928) 607-5263 [MAILTO] embiopterid@yahoo.com

OBJECTIVE: To secure a research or technical position utilizing skills and knowledge related to my field and academic achievements.

EXPERIENCE:

-Title: Research Assistant -Date: August-December 2002

-Laboratory Description: The laboratory was concerned with the elucidation of the structure and function of the antennal lobe in Manduca sexta, the tobacco hornworm moth. The laboratory was especially focused on the glomeruli of the antennal lobe, from which most of the confocal microscope data was taken.

-Research Experience: I used open-source and free software to perform a 3-d reconstruction of the neurons of interest for use in neuron simulations conducted on a computer running Red Hat Linux.

-Title: Research Fellow -Date: Summer 2000

-Laboratory Description: The laboratory had focused on changes in regulation of specific metalloproteinases leading to metastasis in tumorous mammalian cells. Using radioactive polynucleotide hybridization techniques on embryonic mouse tissue and tumorous cell lines, they demonstrated a correlation in changes in the regulation of metalloproteinases and the degree of motility in cells which normally expressed them.

-Research Experience: I began a survey of integrin expression in some of the same cell lines and tissues. I searched for gene sequences of the known human and mouse integrins online and designed fluorescent primers for use in the TAQ machine, a PCR machine that uses fluorescent probes and primers to enable polynucleotide quantification.

SKILLS:

-lab equipment: Use of pipette machines, balances, spectrophotometers, pH meters, PCR and quantitative PCR machines, electrophoresis and sequence isolation equipment, nucleotide visualization equipment, incubators, centrifuges, etc.

-Techniques and skills: Experience with recombinant DNA manipulation, the use of plasmids for bacterial expression, sequence isolation, restriction cloning, tissue culture, stock solution, medium, and agar preparation, culture inoculation and incubation, staining and visualization techniques. Exposure to and limited experience with more advanced techniques such as mouse and insect dissection and staining, use of confocal microscopes, and other advanced techniques and equipment.

Experienced in UNIX system administration, shell scripting, debugging and programming in C and C++, lisp and forth, and the use of most MS Windows programs. Experience with the use of online biological resources and databases such as gene bank and the protein databank, and associated software.

EDUCATION: THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA

PERSONAL: In order to finance my undergraduate education I have held a diverse array of short term positions. During my college years I formed an extremely eclectic group of friends with many fields and careers, and am able to understand and work with numerous types of people coming from many backgrounds. I am a team oriented individual who enjoys working on challenging problems that enhance my current knowledge and skills.

I have been fascinated by the biological sciences since I was a boy, and have studied various facets of this diverse field since I was quite young. One of my earliest interests was entomology, especially myrmecology and the physiology involved in the collective behavior of social insects. I have also studied horticulture, including grafting, tissue culture, and hydroponics. I have had an interest in novel computing methods such as genetic algorithms and neural networks for some time. My current educational background allows me to understand and utilize information from many different branches of the biological sciences.

LONG TERM GOALS: To obtain full time employment and to obtain a graduate degree with a specific emphasis based on professional need.
